Sea turtles are fascinating creatures, but little is known about how they spend much of their lives at sea.  Partnering with the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC), a non-profit focused on sea turtle research, Disney Cruise Line is helping to find out more about sea turtles through a one-of-a-kind program tracking them as they swim from nesting beaches to foraging grounds.

Titled “Tour de Turtles,” the unique education program uses satellite telemetry to track turtles on a “marathon” generating awareness for sea turtle conservation.

Sponsored by Disney, “Lumiere” is a female loggerhead sea turtle released along the coast of Florida in 2008.  From a tracking device attached to her shell, researchers are learning more about the migratory patterns of turtles in the wild, and they may be able to use that information to protect sea turtles in the future.

Individuals can monitor Lumiere’s journey and track similar turtles on an interactive website created by CCC.  The program helps to raise awareness and support for a number of programs affecting turtle survival.
